Empathy or sympathy is great, Salena. I think however, not just seeing or hearing, what are the specifics that they suggest will change their circumstances. I am a firm believer in a “business plan” that is simple and has considered its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT). It’s one thing to say you understand, but better to tell them the route to get them the housing, the groceries, the tax breaks, etc. I also believe firmly that the cost of healthcare is NUTs! My kids spend $957 using the Oregon Health Exchange for a husband/wife and child. So much better to “give the money” to the people versus the insurance companies. I would eliminate giving out loans for higher education and watch how quickly tuitions begin to fall. Leaving college $100k in debt with the interest rates charged is a non-starter. I could go on. But, these youth need to see a plan of action that makes logical sense. Not just “we feel you” rhetoric.
